Qld: State government calls for immediate drop, inquiry
The Queensland Government wants an inquiry by the Senate -- or the ACCC -- or a Royal
Commission -- into Australia's petrol price rises.
Premier PETER BEATTIE says last week the oil companies blamed increased fuel prices
on a fire in an Asian refinery -- next, he says, it'll be the fault of the tooth fairy
or the Easter bunny.
The premier's also called on prime minister JOHN HOWARD to cut fuel excise by three
cents a litre -- starting today.
Mr BEATTIE's also launched a petition to try to convince the federal government to
reverse a decision two years ago to take away the ACCC's price-monitoring power over oil
companies.
