FED: Consumers and govt to pick up tab for insurance hike

SYDNEY, Feb 26 AAP - Rising private health premiums would not only slug consumers butwould cost the federal government $500 million, opposition health spokesman Stephen Smithsaid today.

Mr Smith said the Howard government did not appear to have budgeted for the half-a-billiondollar blow-out that would result from the increased cost of the 30 per cent tax rebateon premiums.

He said the premium rises, averaging seven per cent across the industry, would costfamilies between $150 and $250 a year extra.
